    I researched the water intake of 12 male track and field members (long distance runners, n=3 ; sprinters, n=9) during practice at a summer training camp at Jichi Medical University. On the first day and the second day, the members practiced twice : in the morning (9 : 00-11 : 30) and in the afternoon (14 : 00-16 : 30) ; on the third day they practiced only in the morning. They practiced five times in total. The total amount of water intake varied from person to person. The average amount of body weight decrease after practice was 1.1±0.6%. But for the long distance runners (1.5±0.6%), the decrease was larger than that of the sprinters (1.0± 0.6%, p<0.01). As for the true weight decrease as a result of the practice (decrease in weight and total of amount of intake of water), the morning of the first day was the maximum for the long distance runners (3.5±1.1%). It was 2.7±0.9% on an average of five times of practice. The true weight decrease for the sprinters (1.7±0.9%) based on the average of five times of practice was less when compared with the long distance runners (p<0.01. It exceeded 2% only on the morning of the first day. Because runners lose more water through perspiration than they think, they are advised to drink more water than they may feel is necessary.

    Aim: The present study attempted to use HE staining to clarify morphological changes in muscle fibres during recovery from disuse muscle atrophy. Methods: Disuse muscle atrophy was induced by suspending 7-week-old male Wistar rats by their tails for 5 weeks (hindlimb unloading or HU group). Histological changes in the soleus muscle (SOL) during the recovery process were examined and compared with those in control rats who were raised freely without unloading (C group). Results: Wet muscle mass and muscle cross-sectional area per fibre of SOL in the HU group were 52 +/- 5 and 22 +/- 5% of those in the C group, respectively. Muscle atrophy was largely attributable to decreases in the size of muscle fibres, rather than to muscle fibre damage or loss. Muscle mass in the HU group increased quickly after reloading, but recovery of cross-sectional area per fibre was slow, with mean area in the HU group measuring 69 +/- 10% of that in the C group even after 5 weeks of reloading. After 1, 2 and 5 weeks of reloading, incidences of muscle fibres displaying central nuclei (regenerated muscle fibres) were 7.4 +/- 2.4, 7.2 +/- 6.3 and 19.2 +/- 14.5%, respectively. Conclusion: These findings suggest that recovery of muscle fibres atrophied by disuse involves not only growth of atrophied muscle fibres, but also regeneration of muscle fibres. Cross-sectional areas recovery of atrophied muscle fibres thus continues after increases of muscle mass.

    TO EXAMINE THE effects of aging on recovery from disuse muscular atrophy, the following experiments were performed. Using young (12w) and old (50w) female Wistar rats, a muscular atrophy model was produced by nonweightbearing of the bilateral hindlimbs by tail suspension and fixation of the ankle joint in one hind limb for 2 weeks, and the recovery course was examined. Free walking was allowed for 0-6 weeks after the removal of tail suspension and joint fixation, and measurement of the wet weight of muscles and histological examination were performed 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks after the start of walking with four limbs. There was no difference in the degree of atrophy in the fixed soleus between the young and old rats. The recovery from atrophy was delayed in the old rats as compared to the young rats. In the unfixed hind limb, the degree of atrophy was low in both the old and young rats, and recovery was rapid. Because disuse muscular atrophy is prolonged with aging, it is necessary for elderly people, in particular, to avoid the condition of nonweightbearing and immobilization.

    With disuse, e. g. that resulting from tail-suspension, skeletal muscle shows a decrease in both mass and strength, with concomitant atrophy. Type IIc fibers are observed during muscle fiber generation, regeneration and fiber type transformation. Thus, the recovery process of atrophied muscle fibers can be investigated by observing changes in type IIc fiber distribution. In this study, the behavior of type IIc fibers was examined in rats during recovery following 5 weeks of tail-suspension. Male rats were assigned to three groups : control (C), tail-suspension (S), and pair-weight (P), in which body weight was adjusted to that of the S group by controlled food consumption. The results were as follows : 1) After 5 weeks of tail-suspension, the weight of the m. soleus in the S group was less than 40% of that in the C group. 2) Weights of all muscles removed in the S group increased rapidly until 2 weeks into the recovery period, and returned to the level in the P group by 5 weeks. 3) Type IIc fiber distribution in the m. soleus in the S group was increased by about 35% after 5 weeks of tail-suspension, and had not returned to the level in the C group by 5 weeks of recovery. 4) Phanocytosis and central nuclei were observed in the atrophic muscle fibers of the S group.     The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between fatigue curves of muscular power and muscle fiber composition, and between the force-velocity properties and muscle fiber composition when performed powerful contractions at maximum effort in certain load. Subjects were 11 healthy adult male whose ages ranged between 22 and 61 years old. The produced muscular power measured when subjects were required to perform 100 consecutive maximum leg extensions at every 3 seconds using an improved inertia wheel ergometer with an equivalent mass of 529.3kg. Muscle fiber samples were obtained from the ventral part in m. vastus lateralis with needle biopsy technique. Fiber types were classified as fast twitch fiber (FT) and slow twitch fiber (ST), further more FT fiber was divided into FTa and FTb subgroups. Following is the results obtained in this study. 1) The abrupt reduction in muscular power around 40th to 50th consecutive maximum contraction was thought to be mainly due to the fatigue in FT fiber, especially in FTb fiber. 2) Significant correlation (r=0.613, p&le;0.05) was obtained between the degree of regression line of force-velocity properties and %FT. This seemed to suggest that the higher the person's %FT was, the more the reduction in muscular power was affected by the decrease in the velocity component.

    In this study, we investigated the effect of exercise training on serum and liver chblesterol levels and on biosynthesis of liver cholesterol in rats. The training was carried out at low [Low-Ex, 60% max O<SUB>2</SUB> consumption (VO<SUB>2</SUB>) ] and high (High-Ex, 75% max VO<SUB>2</SUB>) intensities for 16 weeks. The energy expenditure was adjusted to be equivalent. The succinate dehydrogenase activities of gastrocnemius muscle in the Low-Ex group and High-Ex group were higher than that of control, 36% and 109% (p<0.05) respectively. The levels of total and high density lipoprotein cholesterol in serum were 14-26% lower than those of control, but no difference was detected between the trained groups. The activity of HMG-CoA reductase in liver microsome was significantly higher than that of control for both trained groups. However, the stimulation of this enzyme activity was not changed by training intensity.

    身体トレーニングに伴う筋出力パワーの向上をForce-Velocity成分から分析してみた。その結果, トレーニングによる筋出力パワーの向上は次の3種類によって生じることが明らかになった。その(1)はForceとVelocity成分がともに増大する。その(2)は, 主としてVelocity成分が増大する。その(3)は, 主としてForce成分が増大するものである。
